We were curious ourselves, so we decided to do a little digging and was a little surprised when we found out the history of the baseball cap. It started in the mid 1800′s when the New York Knickerbockers began wearing the first baseball uniform. It came along with a straw hat, but they decided it wasn’t very functional and moved to a wool hat. Then, in 1860, the Brooklyn Excelsiors wore their own hat they designed, and it became the first version of the baseball cap we know today. 1901 was the year the first mascot was seen on the baseball cap, and this was done by the Detroit Tigers. This idea was so popular that there was only 1 team left in all of baseball to not have their mascot on their hat. The modern baseball hat finally came around in 1940, when latex rubber was used to replace the rough cotton that was used inside the visors of the hats. It doesn’t matter if you wear a baseball cap to keep the sun out of your eyes, or to show your team spirit, they have been a part of America for over 150 years. Bet you didn’t know that, now did you?
Americans have been celebrating Mother’s Day since the Civil War, when a social activist named Julia Ward Howe created a “Mother’s Day Proclamation.” What she said in it was that mothers promote “The great and general interests of peace”, and this was the beginning of Mother’s Day. In the early 1900s a woman from Philadelphia named Anna Maria Jarvis pushed for a national holiday to honor all mothers. Finally, in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson officially made the 2nd Sunday in May Mother’s Day. It is hugely popular among the real hardcore cowboys because it has the classic western look that they all love. They are also very functional, like keeping the sun out of your eyes when you are getting geared up to plant your garden for the summer. A board member of Stetson, Steve Morris, never heads to his garden without first putting on his Stetson straw hat. He faithfully wears it before hopping on his tractor and tending the assortment of goodies he grows each and every year. What’s even more amazing, though, is that he donates all the food that he grows in his garden to the food bank in his town. He averages about 250 pounds per year, and continues to do it just because he loves being outdoors. Although, he won’t admit it, but he has prevented thousands of people going hungry, but does not want the credit for it. He simply does it because he loves it.
Every year Stetson likes to honor the biggest Stetson hat retailer, and this year it happens to be in Los Angeles, California. The Country General Store is located in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, and they are known for supply many Hollywood movies with all their western-gear and cowboy hats. Stetson happens to be one of the most popular brands of western hats that movie-makers like to use. What that means is whenever you see a western-style hat on the big screen, it more than likely is a Stetson hat and probably came from The Country General Store. There are also many celebrities that shop there, including Billy Ray Cyrus who is shown in the picture posing with the owner of The Country Store. They have been in the Los Angeles community since 1971 and became popular among all the farmers of the San Fernando Valley. Since they have been around so long, word spread and now many Hollywood big-shots shop there for all their movie wardrobes, especially if it’s a western. John B. Stetson made an appearance recently, but where you would probably least expect it. He has been voted to become Stetson University’s mascot for the Hatters. A competition was held to have voters help choose what the new mascot would be and John B. won hands down. The five finalists who came up with the different mascots that were voted on were given Stetson hats for making it as far as they did in the competition. We think it was a perfect choice for the team and Stetson is proud to be able to represent them, and we are sure John B. would be proud too. Especially because he is wearing one of the biggest Stetson hats ever made and you can almost see the resemblance between the two!
